Today I launch my series on updates for Release Wave 1 for 2024. Today I am taking you through the features and functionality we can expect to see released between March 2024 and October 2024 specifically within the Power Apps space.
The PDF file also includes information about Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Pages, Power Virtual Agents, Microsoft Dataverse, Microsoft Power Platform governance and administration, and data integration.
The Microsoft Power Platform features coming in the 2024 release wave 1 have been summarized in a separate release plan as well as a downloadable PDF
Building Modern Apps
With advancements across the Power Platform, the current create page stands as a relic, failing to keep pace with the evolution of our creation experiences. Introducing a modernized alternative tailored for seasoned creators. This revamped interface places a premium on app creation while offering pathways to craft all elements available within the Power Apps UI. Key features of this modern create page include:
Sleek, unified design
Intuitive hierarchy facilitating seamless navigation
Prominent entry point for copilot creation assistance
Optimized for experienced makers, yet accommodating for newcomers
Fresh tile design for enhanced visual appeal
Enjoy the new look of model-driven apps
Model-driven Power Apps have undergone an interface refresh, now in alignment with the latest Microsoft Fluent Design System. This updated UI is activated by default, presenting makers with visually appealing controls and experiences aimed at enhancing user satisfaction.
The default UI for model-driven Power Apps has been revamped, offering a refreshed aesthetic that encompasses updated styling elements such as fonts, colors, borders, shadows, and more. This renewed appearance enhances the usability of model-driven apps, enabling users to achieve their objectives swiftly and effectively.
With the release of wave 1 in 2024, the new UI becomes the default experience for all model-driven app users. Users retain the option to revert to the previous interface via the "New look" toggle located on the top bar..
Copilot - Get help filling forms in model-driven apps
Form fill assistance accelerates the form-filling process for users within model-driven apps. When utilizing main forms in model-driven apps on the web with the New Look feature enabled, users can access AI-generated field suggestions based on their commonly used data. These suggestions are provided as optional prompts, allowing users the flexibility to accept, ignore, or reject them as desired.
Use copilot easily in canvas apps
Copilot functionality is turned on, by default, in canvas apps that connect to Microsoft Dataverse data. No special configuration is needed to use copilot, so it’s available when users ask questions and can help them better understand their data.
Copilot is already turned on in canvas apps that connect to Dataverse data so there's no special configuration needed by makers or admins. Copilot is available right away when users ask questions and can help them better understand their data. For example, users can ask which employee has the highest sales or which warehouse is out of stock for a certain SKU. Copilot queries Dataverse tables to find answers.
Use copilot to build and edit apps in Power Apps Studio
Following the release of Copilot, there has been a surge in customer demand for its assistance in app development tasks, particularly in areas like UI design and formula creation. To meet this growing need, we have expanded Copilot's capabilities to enable app building through natural language input. This enhancement aims to streamline the app development process and enhance the likelihood of success.
Within Power Apps Studio, makers now have the option to utilize Copilot for building and editing apps using natural language commands. Makers can seamlessly execute tasks such as adding screens and controls, adjusting properties, and establishing data connections.
Makers can simply issue straightforward prompts, such as,
Build me an app to track my expenses
Add a new column for expense type
Set the font size of all labels to 24
Bold this label for all fields
Connect my new table to my contact table
